Job Description

General Summary Reporting to the assistant vice president of the Career Center, the director of career education leads the assessment, development and delivery of career related advising, credit-based courses and curriculum integration. The director provides strategic direction, leadership and goals for the advising and University Internship Program (UIP) teams, leads the Transferable Skills Initiative (TSI) and oversees the college teams. He/She liaises closely with academic advisors, faculty and college leadership to integrate career readiness throughout the students' academic experience. Through programming and partnerships across the colleges, he/she creates opportunities for students to identify their values, interests, personality and skills. He/She is a key member of the Career Center leadership team working closely with the Director of Communication & Operations and the Director of Career Experiences to provide seamless career services and support to students, their families, alumni, faculty and staff.

Responsibilities and Duties

•Work with the assistant vice president, Career Center to set goals that align with department, division, and university priorities.
•Monitor and report progress on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis, adjusting tactics as necessary. •S/he will lead a team to: ◦Plan and implement strategies, goals and tactics for engaging students in career development and education activities. ◦Work with key stakeholders in the colleges such as academic advisors, department chairs, associate deans, deans and faculty, to drive curricular integration of programs, exercises and courses that focus on the development of career readiness, knowledge and skills, and help students explore future careers and options. ◦Drive the creation and integration of credit-based career development courses that address career exploration and internships as a pipeline to full-time employment. ◦Facilitate incorporation of career preparation concepts into academic offerings such as the sophomore seminar and capstone courses or equivalent. ◦Identify trends in career advising and stay on top of changes in student preferences to inform how career education is best delivered.

•Lead the integration of transferable skills identification into curricular and co-curricular activities to help students gain insight into skills gained and how they can be applied to their future career goals.

•As the subject matter expert, help connect transferable skills and programmatic learning goals to the university learning outcomes and identify how to measure/assess students' progress in attaining them. •Perform other duties as assigned. Managerial Responsibilities

•(3) direct reports including associate director, advising (Loop), associate director, advising (LPC) and faculty director, UIP.

•Decisions regarding the overall strategic direction and policies and procedures of the Career Center will be referred to AVP.


Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree

  • (7) or more years experience working in higher education, developing professional/career development programs and assessing learning.

  • Experience advising/coaching students and helping them develop and identify professional skills and competencies.

  • Experience supervising and mentoring professional staff and working cross-functionally.

  • Experience developing and assessing curricula.

  • Experience managing projects utilizing both human and technical resources.

Other Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to use social media tools to engage students.

  • Proficiency in MS Office is required.

  • Familiarity with career management and mentoring systems, e.g. Handshake.

  • Familiarity with career development models.

Flexible working hours including evening and weekends may sometimes be required.
Travel between campuses is required.
